CD Review:
Ottawa singer/songwriter Trevor Alguire dropped the Mercury Pickup moniker for his second release. You will still hear Tom Thompson's pedal steel and guitar but many of the players you hear on Narrowed Down have disappeared to be replaced by Rob Skitmore (guitar), Simon Wright (bass) and Peter von Althen (drums) as well as a few others. Alguire continues in the country rock vein singing introspective songs that are for the most part mellow and relaxing. You will hear Casey Comeau, an Ottawa country favourite, singing back up on the last track ("Means to an End"). But its Alguire's vocals and Thompson's work that highlight this CD.
If you enjoy Blue Rodeo, The Lowest of the Low or Uncle Tupelo (Alguire cites the Illinois band as a favourite) then As of Yesterday will be pleasing to you. In fact the whole album is good enough to be seen on most end of the year lists including mine.

CD Review:
Music for Cats has decided to re-release the Hilotrons debut album to much buzz. The Trons have gained a wider audience in the last three years and since the original is such a hard find it was appropriate for MFC to issue it again. The album has been re-mastered with additional songs from the original recording sessions. The Hilotrons have also released a CD independently this year (2006) (called Bella Simone) so you have two albums of new wave pop with indie rock influences to whet your appetite for Ottawa based music.
The Band, Mike Dubue (vocals & keys), Paul Hogan (guitar), Philip Shaw Bova (drums), Damian Sawka (bass, keys) and Mike Schultz (keys, vocals), are a slick playing masterful conglomeration that take influences from varied musical styles and blend it into songs that once listened to are hard to expel from the brain. You can see a bit of the Talking Heads here and there through the music and lead singer Dubue even saunters into Johann Holzel territory on some of his vocals. Pick it up for anyone who likes to experience the best in Ottawa talent.
