CD Review:
This is The Tragically Hip's best CD. Gord Downie's song lyrics shine best here. Downie also has a voice unique in the rock world, so much so, that you recognize it even if you've never heard the song before.
Downie's writing talent in Canada is respected so much that he published a book of poetry. He reminds me of Leonard Cohen in that way except Cohen was a poet and novelist first, then became a musician, whereas, Downie was the reverse. Downie can join Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Jim Morrison in lyrical talent and not fall behind.
This band, from Kingston, Ontario, never really worried about popularity and therefore never really left Canada for bigger money in the States. It was the driving force behind so many acts keeping Canada as their base as they saw the Hip make a comfortable living without moving down south. You can partially thank the Hip for Montreal and Toronto's ascension to the top of the world stage for indie artist in the '00s.
This album needs to be listened to a few times to pick up on what they are saying, the music isn't simple. So, if you want to see the best of what the Canadian music scene has to offer, this is the first band you should experience. My personal favourites on this CD are "Locked in the Trunk of a Car," "Wheat Kings" and "Courage." Do me a favor and print out the lyrics to the songs while listening and you will see what I mean when speaking of Downie's writing talent.
