CD Review:
One of the great albums of the '90s, Dummy introduced Portishead to the world. Geoff Barrow, the music composer, worked with many in the field of trip hop, including Massive Attack (of which Blue Lines gets the most comparisons to Dummy), Tricky and others.
Barrow used all he learned to develop one of the true gems of the whole UK trip hop scene. This album beat out Blur and Oasis for album of the year in the UK (The Mercury Music Prize). It is not undeserved. Barrow's mix of slow hip hop beats, jazz influenced soundscapes and superior production combines with Beth Gibbons' melancholy vocals to create a dark and mellow sounding masterpiece. If you like slow, creepy, and dark electronic-based sound with a haunting female voice, then Dummy is the perfect album for you to search out and buy.
