CD Review:
Many people have attempted, both before and after Father MC, to create a meshing of R&B and rap, but most have not done it as well as on this album Close to You. Coming from a dance-hall and Reggae background, Timothy Brown (a.k.a. Father MC) has enough experience to pull a record like this off.
Consisting of 11 songs that blend emotion with a rap voice, Close to You fails only in its excess. What gives it merit also makes it fall short. Rap and R&B mesh very well (esp. with a female voice) but only up to a point. Like the ballad in a rock album, the slow sweet song on a rap album works, but only as a part of the whole not as the whole itself.
If you wish to hear what I mean, listen to The 18th Letter by Rakim. Rakim's album, with songs such as "Stay a While" and "Show Me Love" add the perfect spice to an album that gives you some of the best lyrical raps about topics other than just love.
Now after saying that, this album may be loved by those of the female persuasion as I suspect Timothy had women in mind when making this record. All the songs tell of love and devotion to a special woman and what girl does not enjoy that. But for this reviewer (and most guys) it's a bit much.
