CD Review:
This is the start from where The Band becomes Canada's most critically acclaimed rock band. Personally, I prefer their second album over this one but it's similar to drawing straws, as not only these two but the band's first four albums are classics.
It's funny that bands like The Beatles continue to garner deserved attention but The Band, which were just as popular at the time, fall by the wayside. This band should not be left behind.
With songs like "Chest Fever" and "The Weight", Music From Big Pink is a classic from the sixties that didn't follow the trend towards psychedelica like The Greatful Dead. With stints with Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan, you can see why. More attuned to folk and blues, The Band put out four albums, starting with this one, which defined a generation. They went downhill after the fourth butwith them you can see why their acclaim was justified and they are a must in a comprehensive music library.

CD Review:
The Band's best release. After putting out Music From Big Pink a hectic album with everything on it working individually but the symmetry the band would exude had to wait for this one. Robertson took over most of the composing and writing duties and his talent shines on this album.
It's quite interesting that a Canadian band would put out an American roots album better than any released by anyone other than Bob Dylan. Songs like "King Harvest" (describing the union worker), "Rockin' Chair (describing a retired sailor), "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" (describing Virgil Cane in the Civil War), all describe America of the 19th century with great clarity.
One of the most pleasing aspects of The Band is the frequent changes at lead vocals. This band is one of the very few to perform this feat without any detriment to the band or to the listener. It seemed every time they changed from Manuel to Helm to Danko, it was perfect for the song.
When listening to the music, you can see that there is talent in abundance. With this album, the members meshed better than on their first release. This will continue on their next two albums, so that you will have four albums of excellence from the best band ever produced by Canada (except for The Tragically Hip).
