CD Review:
The heart of Golden Famile is lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Darrell Angus. Back in 2001, Angus had a bunch of material that didn't fit in with the other projects he was a part of (including his participation in the traditional country band Casey Comeau and the Halfmilers - since disbanded). He worked out the material with friend and former bandmate of the Halfmilers also, Richard Jeffrey, to create Golden Famile's self-titled debut recording.

The rest of the band is made up of Mike Sheridan (drums), Jennifer 'Casey' Comeau (organ), Jay Baird (saxophone), Ryan Hough (violin), and Nathanial Hurlow (bass).

The album itself is slow burning roots country affair led by Angus's voice, guitar and banjo, and harmonica. You will hear originals and a great cover of a Merle Travis tune called "Dark as a Dungeon." It describes a miner's life and was a great addition to the record. Other highlights include "Anson Plaza," a morose song that brings forth images of a small town life trying to escape boredom through alcohol, and "For California," which has a nice melody.

CD Review:
Except for Technical Ecstasy, this is Sabbath's worse album. Made at a time when the band was more influenced by drugs than the muse, the album suffers the further it plays. Ozzy had left the band over artistic differences only to return and do this album and leave for good until the '98 reunion.

The album is unfocused. Adding Jazz influences and average straight forward rock fodder embarrassed the band even more than the crap that Technical Ecstasy was two years earlier.

Although the album crashed, it is still Black Sabbath, and "Never Say Die" and "Johnny Blade" are two examples that remind us that, even at their worse, the band still can kick ass.

With Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die!, Sabbath proved that drugs and egos can destroy even the greatest of bands.
