The Wild Guys (2004) --> An intelligent comedy which was a hit play before being adapted to the big screen. Director William Gereghty makes his feature film debut with The Wild Guys after honing his skills in television. The play was written by Rex Bromfield and Jackson Davies (of which both acted in the play and Davies stars in the movie). Although the film is set in the forests of British Columbia, where four men embark on a camping retreat; and get lost in the process while being chased by bears and poachers, the main crux of the film could have taken place at any male-oriented location because the film is about cleaning out one's closet. When a film is essentially about male bonding and working through personal problems, men will stay away in droves, so it was ingenious for both Bromfield and Davies to "dress it up" as a wilderness comedy. Both funny and charming it is no wonder that the original play, and now the film, have won awards from around the world.

Dancer In The Dark (2000) --> If you like depressing movies then this is the one for you. Directed by Lars von Trier and starring the great Icelandic singer Bjork (who also created all the music) this movie is a devastating watch. Lars filmed the whole movie on a hand held camera which gives it a documentary feel. The effect takes a bit to get used to, but it works powerfully at the end of the movie as it makes the last scenes crushingly realistic. The movie is dispersed with musical numbers that show off Bjork's singing talent and it gives the film an extra strangeness. This film bodes well for Lars's directorial future.

Crossroads (2002) --> I love how Hollywood always maxs out a star's potential. Hillary Duff is the next version of this tried-and-true formula of making movies with music pop stars. This one stars Britney Spears and she can't act but that isn't really important to a film marketed to kids who want to see their favourite stars in other roles.

Elf (2003) --> Elf is a vehicle for Will Ferrell's quirky style of humour and it works on most fronts. Elf tells the story of Ferrell who becomes an elf after stowing away in Santa's gift bag as a baby. When he grows up he leaves the North Pole to look for his real father in New York the fun begins. With very little knowledge of the outside world and the innocence of a child, Ferrell becomes entangled in various comedic situations that show off his foolish brand of acting that has charmed movie goers the world over.
