Running Scared (2006) --> Paul Walker (as low lever mobster Joey Gazelle) is given the responsibility to dispose of a murder weapon (a gun that killed two policemen on the take). When Joey's 10 year old son and his friend Oleg find the gun, Oleg later uses it to kill his abusive stepfather. The gun makes it back on the street and Joey must find it before the cops or the mob underworld finds it. This Wayne Kramer directed thriller is a fun ride and adds a different perspective to the typical mafia flick.

United 93 (2006) --> A fictionalized account of United Flight 93's hijacking and eventual crash in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania on Sept. 11th 2001, the film uses all the evidence to tell an emotionally charged story. Although I'm no big fan of the glamorization of tragedy, United 93 doesn't use the screen to show off boastful and super-heroic characters. It chronicles the events without delving too much into character development. You see the boarding, hijacking and eventual crash of the plane after the passenger try to regain control over the jet. You hear the conversations between the people on the plane and their loved ones on the ground through the on board phones or personal cell phones used by the passengers. It is a simple although highly charged movie that did a credible job in answering what it might have been like on the only hijacked plane that didn't reach its destination on that fateful day.

Brick (2005) --> On of the best films of 2005 didn't catch the eye of this reviewer until a year later. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt a gritty high school teen who investigates the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend (a far cry from his role as Tommy on 3rd Rock from the Sun) after she telephones him under some unknown stress. Gordon-Levitt is brilliant as Brendan. He reminds you of Humphrey Bogart back in the film noir days of the '30s and '40s. The film itself pays homage to the sub-genre but presented in colour rather than in B&W.

Monster House (2006) --> When three kids investigate a haunted house in their local neighbourhood, they find a twisted love story and a possessed domicile bent on riding the town of its underage population. Starring the voices of Kathleen Turner (the house), Mitchel Musso (D.J.) and Steve Buscemi (Nebbercracker) the film is an entertaining 90 minutes although the animation could have been better.
