Hostel (2005) --> A film that reminds you of so many others (Saw (2005) would be the most obvious), Hostel tells the story of two American twenty-somethings backpacking across Europe for adventues of debauchary that fall prey to a torture and murder ring in a Slovakian town. The two are captured and tortured by participants who pay the ring to satisfy their sick fantasies. When one of the Americans escapes the gore flick turns into a chase movie. This livens up an otherwise well-tred subject for the latest horror movies but it still doesn't save the film from mediocrity.

The Polar Express (2004) --> Tom Hanks voices many of the characters in this Christmas fantasy flick about a boy who boards a magical train heading for the North Pole. After doubting Santa Claus' existence the boy is brought to the man himself to watch Claus' launch on Christmas Eve. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on the children's book by Chris Van Allsburg, this animated film is a great watch around Christmas time.

Nanny McPhee (2005) --> Emma Thompson both starred and wrote the screenplay for this modern version of the age old story of a Nanny setting a dysfuctional family on the right course for the future. As it is just another Sound of Music or Mary Poppins with a twist (and without the singing), Nanny McPhee is far from original. But the theme is an universal one so you can't help but enjoy the movie.

Blade: Trinity (2004) --> The third movie of the Blade franchise is its worse. The movies were best when Blade was the centre of attention. Having two helpers who eat up screen time was not a great move. Especially since one was Ryan Reynolds who changed the film from a cool and dark gothic vampire movie into a teen comedy flick. Reynolds shows his worth, with this brand of humour, in movies such as Waiting. not in films like Blade. Another problem in casting was having Parker Posey as Danica Talos. Unfortunately Posey can't act and having her try to pull off the tough-chick/punk bitch role was not credible. Finally, the story-line was also a disappointment compared to the first two. It seemed like David S. Goyer ran out of good ideas so he fell back on the easiest of ideas, bringing Dracula back from the dead.
