The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) --> One of the great movies depicting what happens to people when greed gets the better of them, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre has Humphrey Bogart and John Huston teaming up for the third time. (the first two being: The Maltese Falcon (1941) and Across the Pacific (1942)) The movie centers on Dobbs (Bogart), his friend Curtin (Tim Holt) and a crazy old prospector Howard (Walter Huston, John's father) that the two hire to help them find a treasure of gold. The film goes on to win 3 Oscars (Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Walter Huston)). Bogart was shut out of a nomination, but his role as a greedy, murderous and paranoid Fred C. Dobbs was one of the better performances in his career.

Clerks. (1994) --> The first film by Kevin Smith, Clerks peaks into the world of a convenience store worker and his buddy who clerks in the video rental place next door. Filmed in black & white and on a shoe-string budget of $27,000 Clerks gives Smith (who also wrote, produced and acted) a vehicle for his views on pop culture and young America. We are introduced to characters and themes he would use in his larger budget films in later years. References to Star Wars and comic books, the introduction of Jay & Silent Bob, and a nonchalant treatment of profanity and drug use are all revealed to the viewer. Smith is one of America's funniest and smartest writer/directors whose views on modern life are insightful and casually brilliant.
