Lord of War (2005) --> A portrayal of a freelance weapons dealer is the focus of Andrew Niccol's newest film. Both humorous and scary, the film stars Nicolas Cage as Yuri Orlov, a Ukrainian American, who finds he is great at dealing arms to everyone on the planet. Where this film shines is its convincing authenticity of the global trade in arms. It takes no sentimental or melodramatic look at the subject and shows how ineffective law enforcement is, especially when states are the ones who are doing the buying.

Hotel Rwanda (2004) --> Having a reputation for great dramatic films, Terry George does not disappoint both in writing and directing this disturbing movie. Based on the true story of Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu manager of a posh Belgian Hotel in Rwanda, who saves over a thousand Tutsis by harbouring them in the Hotel, Hotel Rwanda can easily be compared with Schindler's List. The juggling of so many tasks by Rusesabagina in trying to keep his family and the refugees alive is truly scary to imagine. Don Cheadle, as Rusesabagina, does a spectacular job and received an Oscar nomination for his work.

The Cave (2005) --> The worse condemnation a thriller can have is being called boring. The Cave has you yawning for over 45 minutes before anything of interest happens. Spielberg did the same with Jaws (without the boredom) but for some reason Bruce Hunt (the director) doesn't build up the tension properly enough to make the viewer anticipate the monster's arrival. The scenes are shot too close to decipher who is getting attacked and where they are running to when they try to escape. You are lost through much of the film.

Stealth (2005) --> A film with too many plot twists of an idiotic nature to enjoy, Stealth leaves the viewer with the question, "Who would want to write such a screenplay?" The answer, W.D. Richter, that's who. Richter has proven he can write, but it has usually been adaptations to novels written by other men. It seems he had too many flights of fancy to make this film work. Stealth tells the story of the next generation of fighter jet (it needs no pilot). When it goes out of control, the three best pilots the navy has to offer must track it, bring it back, or destroy it. But the jet seems to be an enemy at one time and a friend at another. When it saves two of the pilots at the end of the movie, you throw up your hands and wonder what the hell you were doing wasting 2 hours of your life watching this movie.
