Concert Review: Tegan And Sara

With line ups around the corner and a block down Rideau St. I am glad I didn't have to wait to enter the Capital Music Hall for tonight's concert. Braving minus temperatures and large crowds, fans of these sibling rockers are showing their appreciation. The twins will have a full venue with all ages attending when they hit the stage after the opener Lindy finishes his set.

Lindy is actually Winnipeg native Lindy Vopnfjord who is supporting his new CD Suspension of Disbelief (released in the summer of 2004) and will be joining Tegan and Sara on parts of the girls' tour to the east coast. Lindy is of Icelandic origin honing his musical skill at an early age with help from his father, an Icelandic folk artist of exceptional talent. Lindy doesn't play folk on his CD; he kicks out some great rock with songs like, "Important," and "Picture of You."

After Lindy played to a receptive crowd, cheers were heard in exuberance for Tegan and Sara's stage arrival. If you can use the crowd as an indication, the girls' fan base is of the teenage demographic with a smattering of lesbian influence (the girls are proud gay activists). Tegan and Sarah are promoting their new CD, So Jealous, on this tour and it has made quite an impression in North American music circles. Its most highly acclaimed compliment came when Rolling Stone identified it as one of the top 50 CDs of 2004.

The girls played the whole album through this night with the songs, "So Jealous," "I Know I Know I Know," and "Where Does the Good Go" as highlights. Although the twins stage presence in unspectacular - they are restricted to the area behind their microphones for the most part as both sing - the crowd's response to seeing them live and in person showed no disappointment.

Overall, the concert was well worth the reasonable admission price (if you could get a ticket that is as every show the girls do is sold out early) the only problem was actually trying to see the band. With the crowd packed in like sardines on both levels of the hall, your humble reporter had to dodge and dive between screaming fans in order to get a good view. When you have the amount of followers Tegan and Sara have, being in the press gives you no privileges when actually watching the concert in the confined spaces of this venue. But with the caliber of the performance, who cares, everyone had a great time and when the twins come back to the capital, do yourself a favour, go see them. You won't be disappointed.
