Singin' in the Rain Scene - Malcolm McDowell (as Alex de Large) breaks into a house with his gang. He beats the owner and ties up his wife. The casual nature of McDowell's character while committing such horrendous acts is what gets you most.

Body in the Chipper Scene - Frances McDormand (as Sheriff Marge Gunderson) hears a strange noise coming from behind a house she is investigating. She finds her suspects as one is finishing the other off by grinding him through a wood-chipper. The sounds of human bones taxing the grinder's teeth give you shivers up the spine.

17. La Vita E Bella [Life Is Beautiful] (1997)
Mountain of Skulls Scene - When Roberto Benigni (as Guido Orefice) is traveling through the fog with his sleeping son, he comes upon a large pile of something. As he gets closer, the pile becomes clear and you see a mountain of skulls and other bones. What shocks most is that they are the bodies of massacred Jews from the concentration camp Benigni is confined to and you realize he and his son could suffer the same fate.

16. Pulp Fiction (1994)
Gay Rape Scene - When Marsellus Wallace (played by Ving Rhames) is brought into the back room of a pawn shop, the door opens to show him being anally assaulted by a local police officer. Add in the Gimp (a leather-bound slave kept in a box) who is inferred to be the regular recipient of this deed and you get a scene that is truly creepy.

15. Marathon Man (1976)
Dentist Chair Scene - When Dustin Hoffman as Babe Levy is wrongly suspected by a Nazi diamond smuggler as knowing of the smuggler's plans, he is captured and interrogated. As Hoffman knows nothing, the smuggler, a dentist, uses the tools of his trade to torture Hoffman into a unforthcoming confession. When the drill is heard penetrating Hoffman's teeth, you cringe and jump simultaneously.

12. Dancer in the Dark (2000)
Final Execution Scene - Bjork (as Selma Jezkova) is in prison for the mistaken death of her next door neighbour. Through the movie you never believe she will be killed but when the scene arrives and she is hanged it is quite mind-blowing. As the movie was filmed with a shouldered camera, which makes the scene look like a documentary (and therefore real), it becomes more devastating.

 |
11. The Godfather (1972)
Decapitated Horse Scene - When a Hollywood director doesn't wish to cast a friend of the Godfather in an upcoming movie, he wakes up in his bed with the severed head of his prize horse to keep him company. The director's reaction adds to the shocking effect.
