No Time - The Guess Who 81. No Time - The Guess Who American Woman (1970) - 3:50

Everyone is tired of hearing "American Woman," especially since Lenny Kravatz decided to cover it and make it even less appealing. This is not the case for "No Time," another classic from Canada's most iconic rock band. Cummings' voice is raw and emotional and the tune is one of the all-time classics in CanRock history.

Bad Habit - The Offspring 82. Bad Habit - The Offspring Smash (1994) - 3:45

If you have ever tried to get home after a hard day at work with rush hour traffic bearing in on you, you can understand why some people become frustrated to the point of outright anger, rudeness, and occasional violence. Rather than commit a random act of violence with a baseball bat on the car that just cut you off, put this song on the CD player and let your anger dissipate. "Bad Habit" is an over-the-top song about using a gun to make those around you better drivers. The implied humour will put a smile on your face and the drive home will be less stressful, you stupid dumbshit goddamn motherfucker!

Fast Car - Tracey Chapman 83. Fast Car - Tracy Chapman Tracey Chapman (1988) - 4:58

Tracy Chapman does not write uplifting songs. They are melancholy and depressing. But if you are ever in a funk and need great music to fit your black mood, Tracey is the perfect companion. "Fast Car" is a song about the struggle of a couple trying to pull themselves out of poverty. The woman works hard but gets nowhere. The man is so defeated his only solace comes in the form of a car he endlessly drives aimlessly fast. If you are not in a similar situation and you can listen to this song without downing a bunch of sleeping pills, perhaps you will understand the true meaning of a lifetime of quiet desperation.

Let's Go Crazy - Prince 84. Let's Go Crazy - Prince Purple Rain (1984) - 4:41

Prince is more known for his sexually explicit songs, but when he puts his mind to kicking out a funk infused dance track, he has few rivals. "Let's Go Crazy" is the perfect example of this talent. Upbeat, hip, and danceable, it mixes electric guitar, synthesizer, drums, vocals harmonies, and Prince's signature howls that makes it very difficult to stay in your seat. The song is over two decades old and still is included in most DJs collections.

Thank You - Dido 85. Thank You - Dido No Angel (1999) - 3:40

Dido has the perfect female voice. Like Sinead O'Connor, or Bjork, Dido could sing in any style and you would listen. Dido decided pop would be the venue for her talent and "No Angel" is her best song. But it doesn't really matter what the song is about (thanking a lover for making the world seem less than an unending series of disasters) since her voice captures you attention and never lets it go.

You Make it Easy - Air 86. You Make it Easy - Air Moon Safari (1998) - 4:02

The dreamy electric pop of Air is best represented in this beautiful song about two lovers coming together after leaving behind a world of heartbreak and loneliness. Sung by guest vocalist Beth Hirsch "You Me it Easy" transports you to a dream world where nothing negative can touch you. Even If only for 4 minutes, this escape is still a blessing. It is impossible not to feel the stresses of the day fall off your shoulders when listening to Air, and "You Make it Easy" is not an exception.

Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl - Broken Social Scene 87. Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl - Broken Social Scene You Forgot It in People (2005) - 4:34

Simple melody, nice blend of instrumentation, and the beautiful voice of Metric's Emily Haines, "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" is a lamentation by a jilted girl by a friend/lover who falls prey to the shallowness of teenage life. "...bleaching your teeth/smile and flash/talking trash under your breath" sums up what teenage women represent. A saccharine song with a bitter bite "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" is one reason for Broken Social Scene's rise to international acclaim.

You Got Another Thing Coming - Judas Priest 88. You Got Another Thing Coming - Judas Priest Screaming for Vengeance (1982) - 5:09

Priest were the first of the many British Invasion metal bands to gain popularity State-side in the late 70s early 80s. At the height of their popularity in 82, they released the single "You've Got Another Thing Coming" and ever since it has been a staple of the genre. A never say die, take on the world song backed by testosterone induced metal riffs and vocals. What's not to love!

Sanctified - Nine Inch Nails 89. Sanctified - Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine (1989) - 5:47

Usually when a rock lyricist describes a woman who he knows is bad for him, but can't resist her charms, he refers to her as heroin. Trent Reznor picks up on this theme in "Sanctified" but uses religious overtones instead of drug addiction as the center. Reznor's voice is biting and his use of the synth bass and guitar is moody and repetitive. The song is an animalistic carnal anger-filled masterpiece.

Smoke Baby - Hawksley Workman 90. Smoke Baby - Hawksley Workman Lover/Fighter (2003) - 6:08

Workman's pop gem that mixes in elements of hip hop is a story best befitting a millionaire rock star on tour flying in and out of the major cities around the world; hopping in and out bed of the metropolitan areas prettiest women taking recreational drugs and filling up with cigarette smoke and alcohol. You can feel the emptiness of such a lifestyle where the most intimate of bedmates are the closest of strangers; a great sonic representation of fame's loneliness.
