BC Fashion Week Spring 08

Ginni Kelley

The Ginni Kelley show opened with an airy full skirt in a flower pattern with subtle sequins (below). I loved it because it looked fresh and easy to dress up or down. Throughout Ginnis' show the details got a little bit too extravagant for me, but the craftsmanship that went into the designs was truly breathtaking. I really liked her sheer cover-ups (a major theme in all this weeks shows), but I wish she would have shown them with a bikini underneath instead of a bra. My favorite one had one side dipped in blue dye and the other dipped in yellow with a little over lap in the middle (below). There were a few mini dresses that were way too short, and need to be adjusted by the model at the end of the runway. However, I really liked how Ginni touched on the big shoulder trend. Her version looked delicate, but I would have skipped the beading around the neck. There was a pair of nice fitting black pants and a nice long white skirt made from a gorgeous looking silk. In fact, all the fabrics in this show looked beautiful.

Ginni showed a few of her outfits on a plus sized model including one with gathered chiffon and a navy one with a cut out coming around the body. I thought both dresses looked nice on the model and I could see versions of both doing well with that demographic. A few of the dresses looked like they would be good for prom, especially one in navy with a scarf over one shoulder; however, I would have had the beading just on the scarf and the rest of the front unadorned. The beading itself was actually quite astounding; but I think that some of the looks would be more captivating if there was just a touch of sparkle instead. On the whole, the collection lacked direction and it was difficult to see how one look transitioned into the next. I was pleased that Ginni served up something a little different, this collection certainly has a market and I think that some of her more subtle pieces will bring in a few new customers.

Ginni Kelley is dishonest. She copies designs from real designers and makes small changes, calling them her own. When will people figure this out?
