BC Fashion Week Spring 08
Generation Next
I loved the Generation Next show. This season,
BC Fashion Week set up a competition for new local designers. The winner receives a ton of prizes, some great publicity and the opportunity to show in next BC Fashion Week, Fall 08. There were 25 applicants narrowed down to three finalists, Elroy Designs, Mia Melon, and Nicole Bridger.
First was
Leanne McElroy for Elroy, showcasing her line made from organic fabrics. Having seen and loved the Fall Elroy stuff at Shop Cocoon, Portobello West, and basically just all over Vancouver, I was excited to see what she would come up with for Spring. The unique details that made her Fall jackets so popular were translated into lighter weight cream and black jackets. I especially liked a cream one with big loose sleeves and a black one that closed at different lengths in the front with pockets. The fabrics looked gorgeous and I loved when she combined the two like in a black knee length dress with a cool hemline that had cutaway parts occasionally pressed up to expose the cream color underneath. I thought the whole collection was very mixable for work and nicely detail orientated for fun. The collection closed with a single red jersey dress made from what must have been a pretty crazy pattern. It had remarkable banding and pleats although I still prefer the light weight jackets with a little more subtle detailing.
Next was
Mia Melon. I liked the first pair of white pants that came out (below); I didn't like the third dress I thought it looked like pajama fabric (below). There was a pair of cute shorts with suspenders (below) in shiny grey and few tank tops with extra back pieces that looked cool. I thought a few of the items were a little unnecessary, especially a pair of printed leggings. I thought the collection was okay, but when Mia walked out at the end I couldn't help but wonder why she didn't show the jersey pants she was wearing that came to just under the knee and featured a lowered crotch.
I loved
Nicole Bridger's collection. She is another designer who focuses on environmentally friendly fabrics and practices. I thought her collection was marketable, unique and well thought out and executed. I loved the stripey fabric she used for the opening tunic and for a very cool draped and pulled skirt that also came in a pink pock-a-dot fabric. I want this cute white jersey dress with dolman sleeves that she layered over top of another dress for next spring. The end dress was another patternmaking wonder, with stripes intersecting at all angles. The only thing I didn't like were the leggings. I am happy that Nicole ended up winning the competition; I think she deserved it. I talked to her briefly after the show and I asked if she was at all nervous about Fall 08
BC Fashion Week when she will show at least 25 outfits, she said "Nope, I'm ready for it!" And I look forward to seeing it.
