The 50 Greatest Albums
not to make the Greatest Albums Lists
The 50 Greatest Albums: See The List
About this list you may ask a question. What is its purpose? Why not list the
50 greatest albums (or 100 greatest for that matter) of all time and leave it at that? Those are great questions. The answer to them is simple. All the great 100 lists have been created already and they cover the territory of music quite well. Lists from all the major magazines have their favourites (Mojo, Rolling Stone, Spin, etc.) and to repeat another list containing these albums would be pointless. We all know that for rock, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Pink Floyd will be listed. For folk music, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell always make the mainstream lists. If we speak of hip hop, Public Enemy, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys are always mentioned. For Soul/R&B, we hear about Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. When punk comes up, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and the Ramones always get most of the attention. Electronic music is represented by Kraftwerk and Can, Jazz with Miles Davis and !
John Coltrane, Blues with Muddy Waters and B.B. King. Finally, Reggae always has Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Other bands/artists that seem to always make the lists are: Bruce Springsteen, Sly and the Family Stone, The Beach Boys, Frank Zappa, Brian Eno, Todd Rundgren, Elvis Costello, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Captain Beefheart, Neil Young and the list goes on.
But what happens after you have perused these artists and are looking to move on. You have listened to: Revolver, Dark Side of the Moon, Beggar’s Banquet, Blonde on Blonde, Led Zeppelin IV and all the other great albums that mark out all the genres of music. Well, that is a where this list comes in. This will be a list where we pay tribute to many bands and artists that always get bumped of the top 100 list because of lack of space. It doesn’t mean they do not deserve attention; they just can’t seem to break the elite 100. Many of these albums you may already have heard or even own. It will not be an obscure list. But if you are interested in moving to the next stage of your musical listening development, then scanning over this list will cause no harm. You may even learn something. Finally, I have to mention that this list will have probably exclude albums that you may think deserving. The only response I can give to this is just as the top 100 lists always leave o!
ff albums that deserve to be there, so this 2nd tier list will end up doing the same. It is the nature of the beast.
Starting in reverse order at number 50, we will count down 10 albums a week so check back periodically for the next installment. Well off we go; here is numbers 50 to 41.
