Is Cary Price the Man?

With GM Bob Gainey trading away Cristobal Huet to the Capitals for a second-round draft pick at the trade deadline, it seems the team has confidence in rookie net minder Cary Price. But does the management of the Canadians really think Price is the resurrection of Patrick Roy? Albeit, Price is proving with each game he has the stuff NHL goaltenders are made of (13-9, 2.76, .911), it seems a bit strange that Gainey, while fighting with the Senators for top spot in the North East Division, would put all his eggs in one basket when the team is positioning themselves for a playoff run in just over a month. It would be quite devastating for Canadians fans, who have been waiting for years for the team to have a chance to do well in the playoffs, to watch Price tank under the pressure. With the Senators floundering (head coach John Paddock was just fired), going 11-12-2 over the last 25 games, the Canadians are set to do well. Let’s hope Gainey is as wise a GM as he was a player and the Canadians come out of the division in good standing come April.

Lunar Eclipse

It was red and weird, and a delight to see. It was visible after 8:43 pm EST in Montreal and it won’t happen again for another couple of years. The lunar eclipse was a great distraction from the television and computer Wednesday night for anyone who decided to bundle up and find a place free from the obstructions of tall buildings and street lights. The cold chill in the air matched the ones traveling up the backs of everyone who finds heavenly events awe-inspiring. It makes one feel attuned to places beyond the soil under one’s feet, yet in a sense, points out the insignificance of one’s own life in the grand movements of the universe. The ten minutes spent looking skyward was worth the brief interlude into questioning one’s existence, now back to the episodes of CSI recorded on the PVR and those unread emails.

We here at Full Spectrum have been watching the animated show since: “Oh no! They killed Kenny! You Bastard!” was a new term in the North American lexicon. If you are one of the few still unaware of South Park (Are there any left?), or want to watch the episodes again, we would like to direct you to a website that has been up for awhile now. Although the videos are not of the highest quality, you do have the freedom to watch the shows whenever you wish in whatever order. Let Them Have a Smoke

Sitting in a cell with nothing to do except talk to a bunkmate or twiddle you thumbs for hours at a time is not a conducive atmosphere for a no smoking campaign. With the ban on smoking in jails across the province in effect presently, do we really need to ban it in the yard too? I wonder how the guards would feel about hundreds of criminals in small spaces all having a nic-fit? It was prudent that Public Security Minister Jacques Dupuis decided to relax the ban. All the prison guards must be breathing easier when they show up for there shifts this week.

It’s coming around to Valentine’s Day once again and love is in the air. Thinking about that special someone becomes an all day activity. You contemplate what gift will pull on the heart strings of the lover in your life. Will it be the traditional roses and chocolate? Or, perhaps it will be jewelry and a stuffed animal? While you ponder on these affairs of the heart, you might want to think about extending the excitement a few days longer; especially if your lover is of the more risqué type.

The guys over at the Drunken Master Review (airing on CKCU 93.1 FM every Wednesday at 5pm) will takeover Barrymore’s on the 16th to bring our fair city a second helping of erotic short films. Repeating their efforts from two years ago, Lee Demarbre and friends will host a night of fun your lover might enjoy attending with you. The previous event was a great success and perhaps if attendance is as high this year, we can look forward to it becoming a tradition each February. The Building Most Beautiful in the City

There are many gorgeous buildings in the nation’s capital but none can compare to the Central Chambers building located at the corner of Elgin and Queen Streets. You may have Parliament close by to grab the attention of many, or even the Lord Elgin or Chateau Laurier trying to steal away gazer’s eyes. But the home to the National Capital Commission is the gem of the lot.

Built in 1890 by the dry goods firm of Edward Seybold and James Gibson and designed by John James Browne, it was originally there to house two railway businesses (the Canadian Atlantic Railway and the Ottawa and Gatineau Valley Railway). Reflecting the Queen Anne Revival style of architectural design, it now holds an expanded office structure hidden behind its street façade. No other building in the city holds its charm and we hope it exists for another 118 years.

Quebec’s Newest Political Party

As of January 22nd, Affiliation Quebec has received its “official party” status in the province of Quebec by the DEGQ (Director General of Elections Quebec). The party, who’s raison d’etre include the defense and expansion of minority rights in Quebec, is led by Allen Nutik, former founder of the Equality Party. Nutik, a Westmount resident and alarm systems entrepreneur, wants the minority vote in Montreal to come to his party as he believes the Liberal Party is no longer a viable option for these residents. It will be interesting to see if the twelfth party of Quebec will gain footing on the province’s political scene. Is the party a viable option for Montrealers or a flash in the pan? Time will tell.

Shobha Coming to Ottawa

For those who are fans of Urban music and aren’t too prejudiced against the city of Toronto and their musical output, Ottawa has a treat coming in the body of Urban/Pop/Soul Artist Shobha. Part of the Believe the Hype Music Festival on this weekend, Shobha is on tour promoting her new CD Work In Progress. If your interested in the festival it begins tonight (Jan.17) and runs through the 19th at 1848 bar at 85 University Private, on the University of Ottawa campus. Shobha will be playing on Friday.

ING Super Saver Contest

The submissions are in for the ING Direct Super Saver Contest. For those of you who aren’t familiar it is a contest where contestants are to submit a video showing the great lengths that they would go to save money. Up for grabs is an ING Investment Account with $ 10,000 in it. Submissions ended yesterday and they have narrowed it down to the Top 10 English & Top 10 French videos. Obrien Charged

It is quite interesting living in a city where the mayor is a suspected criminal. Now that he has been officially charged by the OPP, we as citizens of the region must take the fiasco more seriously than what originally looked like a smear campaign by Terry Kilrea.

Firstly, we must remember he has been accused not convicted of two breaches to the criminal code (Section 121 (1) (d) and Section 125 (b) to be precise) and therefore must be given the benefit of the doubt until he is found guilty.

Secondly, we must admit, those of us who didn’t vote for him, that he has done a bang-up job at city hall especially for a man with no political experience. He came to his senses when moving away from his zero tax increase platform promise, a boon for everyone who thinks city services are more important than a hit to their property tax bill.

But that being said, we must question his judgment to stay on as mayor with this cloud of controversy hovering over his head. Is he still capable of performing the job he was voted in to do? If these charges result in a conviction it will also mean we will have had a criminal for a mayor for the years it took from the time he was elected to the time bars are slammed on his jail cell. Hell, he might have served his term as mayor before the case finishes going through the court process. How unjust would that be since it would mean he tried to rig the election in the first place.

If Terry Kilrea is just crying sour grapes, we hope the mayor sues him with all the force he can muster. No one should have to put up with the tarnishing of his reputation in such a manner. But until that occurs, the mayor should step down and concentrate on defending his reputation in court. If he is found not guilty, he will have our vote at the next mayoral election without question.
